Our Reading Challenge launched on September 1st, and all students at RES are embarking on a year-long reading adventure! At RES, our mission is to transform “have to read” into “want to read,” because the best way to improve at reading is to make it fun and take the time to do it!
We’re challenging each Kindergarten, 1st grade, and 2nd grade student to meet a monthly reading goal of at least 400 minutes from September to April. Meanwhile, our 3rd graders are aiming to read 30 books, and 4th and 5th graders are challenged to read 40 books over the course of the school year.
Each student in K- 2nd grade will take home a reading log to track their daily reading of 20 minutes. When they return their log, they’ll earn a coupon for a personal pan pizza from Pizza Hut! We’ll also track their progress on a class chart each month.
Our 3rd to 5th grade students will track their reading progress using Book Taco, an online platform where they can log the books they've read and take quizzes to check their comprehension. Once students reach their 30 or 40 book goal they will get a cookie from Cumbl Cookie or a gold coin for the book vending machines.
We encourage all students to explore a variety of books to reach their reading goals—whether it’s picture books, easy readers, chapter books, graphic novels, or nonfiction. For our more experienced readers, there’s an additional challenge: they must read books from specific genres to broaden their reading experience
To celebrate their dedication, any K-2nd grade student who meets the reading goal for at least six months, along with any 3rd-5th grader who reaches their book goal, will be invited to our special Reading Inflatable Day in May 2025!
